But here’s the thing: the Globe and Mail’s editors ostensibly chose to endorse Harper as a candidate because they believe the Conservatives “have shown the leadership, the bullheadedness (let’s call it what it is) and the discipline this country needs.” Anyone who’s been paying attention – anyone who hasn’t been relying exclusively on national newspapers for their information during the reign of the Harper government, in other words – surely knows that the Globe and Mail utterly failed to “call it what it is” in its endorsement of Harper as a candidate. When it comes to Harper and his track record, “what it is” is a corrupt disregard for democracy that this country not only doesn’t need, but doesn’t deserve and can no longer tolerate. What’s more, the Globe and Mail’s endorsement of such a candidate – regardless of the fact that he’s the incumbent – betrays their own institutional disregard for democratic principle. To their negligible credit, the editors acknowledge that “the great strike” against the Conservatives as a viable choice in this election includes “a disrespect for Parliament, the abuse of prorogration, [and] the repeated attempts (including during this election) to stanch debate and free expression.
